Anointing of the Sick

“Are there any who are sick among you?  Let them send for the priest of the Church and let the priests pray over them, anointing them with oil in the name of the Lord; and the prayer of faith will save the sick persons, and the Lord will raise them up; and if they have committed any sins, their sins will be forgiven them.” – James 5:14

The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is intended for those who are seriously ill or elderly and for those in need of special help of God’s grace in a time of anxiety.  This sacrament is an act of faith; the faith of the recipient who welcomes and believes the healing power of God, and the faith of the church, which looks to Christ’s death and resurrection as a source of healing power.  While we believe that physical healing is a sign of God’s kingdom, we remember that spiritual healing and a physical cure are not synonymous – we may be healed by God’s grace in the absence of a physical cure.
